Pune RTO to inspect, grade 335 driving schools in Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad

The Regional Transport Office (RTO) of Pune has decided to inspect motor driving schools in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad to verify the standard of training and infrastructure available at these schools.

The RTO will classify schools into 'A', 'B', 'C' and 'D' categories based on the observations and will issue notices to schools in categories 'C' and 'D', asking them to upgrade infrastructure to make training sessions more effective.

There are 335 schools registered in the twin cities - 236 in Pune and 99 in Pimpri Chinchwad. Besides these, 69 driving schools in Baramati, Solapur and Akluj jurisdictions will also undergo inspection. All the schools conduct basic training sessions for learners of two-wheelers, cars and heavy vehicles, who appear for the driving test for permanent licences.

Following similar inspections in 2012, the RTO had asked more than 30 schools to stop providing services, mainly because of poor quality of infrastructure and training standards. The transport office had also carried out inspections about a year ago, but only 70% schools were covered due to unavailability of inspectors and other reasons.

RTO officials have said that this time around, the inspections will be more extensive and in-depth. Inspectors will visit every school and note down their observations on various parameters. As per the Motor Vehicle Act, schools are expected to have basic facilities like adequate space, well equipped classrooms, sign boards, charts of road signs, trained instructors and equipped vehicles to give hands-on training to a learner.

The inspectors will also check if the training schools are functioning properly and maintain monthly log books and information on learners. If required, inspectors will test trainers on their knowledge and skills.

The officials said that during the last two inspections, it was observed that some schools had adopted good practices. They had provided advanced facilities like 'cut models' of vehicles to provide learners accurate knowledge of vehicles. Some schools have even installed simulators.

"We want every school to provide similar facilities to make sure that learners acquire top-level training. Good training will lead to safe driving, which will help curb road accidents," the officials said.

Meanwhile, the association of Pune motor driving schools said that the schools were ready to provide new facilities, but needed financial assistance to upgrade the infrastructure. A driving school owner said that not every school is financially strong to provide advanced facilities. The government should provide financial support to schools to install simulators, the owner said.

High school students get safe-driving lesson from IDOT, state police

    Illinois is the only state that offers a four-day program like Drive for Tomorrow, according to state transportation officials. The event originated in southern Illinois and has expanded across the state.

    Students are divided into six groups and rotate through different activities that engage them in real-life driving situations.

Neville High School principal Whitney Martin says it's time to bring it back.

"We get phone calls everyday of people who are having to look at other options for drivers ed," says Martin.

Superintendent Brent Vidrine says, "we spent the last year with the Department of Motor Vehicles and we have four people certified teachers now to do drivers ed across our three schools."

Vidrine says the program will be the same but prices will go up.

"Students have written thirty hour class and they are offered after school and on Saturdays. We have increased the price from 150 to 250 because it's what it costs us. We factor in our insurance cost, our personnel costs, also our cost to get the program certified we figured all that in while we have to pay our staff and that's how we came to the price.

Brett Lemoine is one of the certified driver's education teachers at Neville and his daughter is a freshman at Neville.

"The way it works is by the time your birthday comes you have to have your permit for so long in order to get your drivers license when your sixteen. My daughter had to start before and I have to take my daughter today for driving which is an inconvenience all the way out but Sam's and it's 400 dollars," says Lemoine.
