Students win competition to prevent distracted driving

Texting while driving makes crashing 23 times more likely, according to dosomething.org. Yet even with the dangers people face when texting or doing other tasks while operating a vehicle, there are still many people who do it anyway.
Students at Red Bank Regional (RBR) high school wanted to address the consequences of distracted driving, and were succesful in winning a contest aimed at raising awareness about the issue. Thirteen juniors and seniors in two “Interactive Media” classes created videos to help drive the point home.
The group used footage of the annual car crash simulation their school does before prom, which shows the potentially deadline outcome of distracted driving, to gain entrance to the fifth annual Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey’s year-long U Got Brains Competition.
Then the RBR students created two videos for the second round of the competition.
One of their videos depicts a teenage boy driving while smoking, drinking and looking at his phone, which causes him to crash his car. When the passenger, his own sister, is killed as a result, he is arrested and sent to jail.
With the involvement of real police officers, judges, handcuffs and prisons, the video aims at showing the very real consequences of this dangerous decision.
In addition, having real siblings and their actual family members and friends in the video made watching the tragedy more impactful for students, explained the Interactive Media teacher, Carl Grillo.
“The actual crash scene was emotional for a lot of students because they knew the students in it, which added realism to the whole thing,” Grillo added.
In addition to creating that video, the students also created a PSA explaining the pledge not to drive distracted. The students came up with the hashtag, #RBRHSDBD, which stands for Red Bank Regional High School Don’t be Distracted.
They students also rigorously promoted that campaign throughout the school by using social media, posters, wrist bands and T-shirts with the hashtag and facts about distracted driving. They even got more than 350 students to sign a banner pledging that they wouldn’t drive distracted, which was hung up in a common area in the school. As a result, the students and administrators were able to garner attention for their message and votes for their contest entry.
As a result of their efforts, RBR was chosen as one of three winners, along with Jackson Memorial High School and Lenape Regional, out of more than 55 high schools that participated in the U Got Brains competition. This was the first year RBR had entered the contest.
As their prize for winning, the school will receive a driving simulator for students to use.
“I think there will be kids who take this more seriously now due to the constant messaging of our campaign,” said junior Josh Bruce, a member of the winning team, in a press release.
Grillo said his students “did a great job” and that they “came into (the contest) not knowing what to expect and made the best video they thought they could do, and their hard work paid off.”
He said that offered technical advice, such as different ways the students could shoot their videos, but that they really “took it and ran with it.”
“I’m very proud of them,” Grillo said.
He added that the students have already begun planning their campaign for next year’s contest.

When their children approach driving age is a fearful time for many parents. Can it be true that the kid who has barely emerged from awkward adolescence may be licensed to pilot a high-powered motor vehicle through heavy traffic on city streets or at high speeds on interstate highways? It’s madness!

Prudent parents postpone the purchase of a new car in anticipation of harsh treatment by inexperienced drivers. Little is more disheartening than taking a vehicle to the body shop before it’s lost the new-car smell. They save extra money to cover the steep increase in insurance costs. They make sure to take their blood-pressure medication regularly.

Parents do have an ally in their concern for driver safety: the state. Or, they did have. Now, the state’s position is uncertain.

Several years ago, the state implemented a graduated licensing process for kids as young as 15. They could receive a limited learner’s permit by completing a driver’s ed course and passing a written test. That would enable them to drive with adult supervision for a year. At that point, they could gain a limited provisional license by passing a road test. Restrictions would apply, but successful driving for six more months would qualify the youngster for a full provisional license.

These steps have helped make sure that teenagers really are ready to be responsible, knowledgeable, safe drivers by the time they’re set loose on the streets and highways.

Unfortunately, this is all in jeopardy. The reason: Funds to pay for driver’s education classes through the public schools have run out. Some of that money might be restored when the state House and Senate enact a new budget; or perhaps none of it will.

For now, driver training has stopped in many North Carolina counties, including Guilford.

The legislature is considering a number of proposals, none of which is as good as the status quo. While the state was covering the cost of driver’s ed classes in the past, it now may pass the funding responsibility to local school systems or let them charge students for the cost — generally around $250.

Schools don’t have the money, and neither do many families. Youngsters from low-income households might have to wait until age 18 to get their licenses, without driver’s training. There’s even a proposal in the legislature to do away with the driver’s ed requirement, putting more responsibility on the parents to provide the training.

That’s a terrifying prospect to many parents. It should be terrifying to the public at large, because many adults are poor drivers. For some teenagers, the only hope for learning how to drive safely is a professional driver’s ed course.

The state can save money in the short run if it cuts funding for driver’s ed. It isn’t hard to imagine how costs would rise over the long term as accidents soar. For the good of all, driver’s ed should be fully funded by Raleigh and required for everyone entering the graduated licensing process.

The state doesn’t ask parents to teach reading and math, for good reason. Driving is also important and potentially more dangerous.
